Question: Should I Soak Grape Leaves Before Using?
I'm a beginner to Middle Eastern cuisine, and I'd like to try making stuffed grape leaves. Do I have to soak the leaves before using?
Answer: If you are using fresh grape leaves, then yes, soaking is best before using. If you're able to find fresh grape leaves they are, in my opinion, so much better than canned. You can purchase canned grape leaves, but they are normally preserved in a brine with a lot of salt that you would want to rinse away before using.
To soak fresh grape leaves, the quickest method would be to place in a pot and cover with boiling water. Allow to sit for 2-3 minutes until soft. You can also place leaves in a bowl of cool water and allow to sit for 2-3 hours. My favorite method is using boiling water as it is much faster.
