Definition: method of cooking a food in boiling water just until soft. The food is intended to be cooked further at a later time. After boiling, food is rinsed under cold water to set, then further cooked or stored for later use.

Examples:
Vegetables used in stir fry are first parboiled to ensure they are tender in time with the rest of the ingredients in the stir fry.
