There are many, many ways to eat hummus in a non-appetizer way; have you considered freezing some of the hummus? Hummus freezes incredibly well and you can freeze it in single-serving size containers for easier use. Just thaw on the countertop or in the refrigerator the night before, give it a good stir, and voila! You have homemade hummus on demand.

Substitutions

Hummus is also an excellent substitute for mayonnaise in just about every recipe. Use it in place of mayo on turkey sandwiches, chicken salad, and even tuna salad. Using it on a pita to make a chicken pita with lots of fresh veggies for lunch can make for a delicious meal. Not only does it taste better, but it is also a lot healthier than mayo.

Make pizza from pita bread, hummus, cheese, and veggies by spreading hummus on top of pita bread as if it was tomato sauce, then adding cheese, veggie toppings, and bake at 350 F for about 12 minutes. It's easy, costs a lot less than pizza delivery, and again, much healthier for you!

Snacks

For a snack, you may like crostini topped with warm shaved roast beef and a dollop of hummus. Use store-bought crostini (or make your own), top it with warmed roast beef or other meat, and add a little warm hummus to the top. Although technically an appetizer, it can be a small snack, too.

Sandwiches

A steak and hummus sandwich is also a great lunch or light dinner meal. You can use flank steak or even sandwich steaks in your grocer's freezer section with hummus spread on pita or a crusty hoagie roll. The meat can be a little greasy and Italian and French loaves do a good job at soaking up the grease. While the sandwich itself isn't very healthy, using hummus instead of mayo makes it a little better!
